EFCC Recovers $3Bn
Over $3billion has been recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as proceeds of crime since 2008, the Chairman, Farida Waziri told newsmen yesterday at the headquarters of the anti-graft agency in Abuja.
Waziri said N3billion of the said sum came from tax tracking which has been remitted to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
She said unlike the practice in most developed countries where tax evaders go to jail, most Nigerians do not take the issue of tax payment seriously.
Speaking on the recent screening and approval of ministerial nominees by the Senate, the EFCC Chairman said the commission would probe the tenure of some former ministers on the request of their successors.
“If the new ministers take over and they have issues we can look into their tenure,” she said.
She confirmed EFCC was investigating former governor of Delta state James Ibori over fresh allegations following a petition submitted by a group called Elders of Delta against him. Waziri said the prosecution of some Bayelsa state officials was not politically motivated.
